*01/23/04 Steve Martin The Pleasure of My Company
What can I say? I love Steve Martin. Interestingly enough, I received this book as a Christmas present from a friend, when I had bought her Martin's Pure Drivel as one of her gifts. Great minds think alike, I guess. This book is funny without being crazy, and touching without being sappy. It's short, but doesn't feel rushed. Martin draws his characters very well, with their foibles and eccentricities...everyone is crazy, even the "normal" people, which is a comfort of sorts.
*01/12/04 Michael Crichton Prey
I started reading this at a friend's house just for something to do. I'm not a huge fan of this type of novel, but Crichton is better than most at making the science seem real without being overly confusing, or boring. Realistic enough to be scary, but light enough to be entertaining, it's a good quick read.
*01/08/04 J.R.R. Tolkein The Two Towers
Continuing on my quest to finally read the whole trilogy, this is my first reading of The Two Towers. It's always difficult to read something after you've read the movie, it takes some of the surprise out, and it's hard to read without picturing the characters and places as they are depicted in the film. However, I enjoyed the book, especially the Ents. Ents are cool.
*01/07/04 P.J Tracy Monkeewrench
I received this book as a birthday present from a friend. Opened it up and started to read, and by the end of the first chapter, I was hooked. Read the whole book in one day. It has a nice combination of humor and suspense, a little computer stuff for the geek in all of us, and lively and interesting characters. The book focuses on a series of murders based on a serial killer computer game...although I figured out who the killer was before the end of the book, it didn't dampen my enjoyment of the novel. I look forward to future endeavors from this mother-daughter writing team.
